As part of their latest software package update, Apple has just released the Game Center, which is essentially a gaming network for the iPhone, iPod, and iPad. This new service will include community-based features, such as leaderboards, friendlists, and achievements.
Apple has indeed taken notice of the increased role of gaming in online activities and communities and is setting out to be a more established player in this area of the market. Many of Apple’s customers are casual gamers (i.e. more used to a social networking setting) and some have been highly involved in online gaming in browser-based communities for years.

Gaming on the iPad — once more developers create games for it, that is — in particular will no doubt be a new and innovating way for players to be immersed in browser-based games. Only time will tell what Apple has in store. We’ll make sure to keep you updated on any new developments.

Indiagames, one of India’s most popular online gaming platforms, will soon be launching Cricket T20 Fever as a new game application for the iPhone. Featuring the sport of cricket, which is really popular in India, this new game will aim to realistically simulate playing the sport.
Cricket T20 Fever will first be launched as a sports game application for the iPhone before it’s launched as a browser-based online sports game. Within a few months, Indiagames also hopes to be able to launch Fever on other platforms and gaming consoles such as Symbian, Playstation, and Xbox.

Indiagames’ newest game may not be as popular in the United States as there’s not a huge cricket fanbase, but it is popular in other countries. The company has previously released mobile cricket-based apps, such as Cricket T20 World Championship, and will be releasing a free standard version of their new game in the App Store, along with a premium version that players must pay for.

Cross-platform gaming is becoming quite popular, especially as iPhones, Facebook, and the web grow more ubiquitous. But it’s quite the hassle for developers to build multiple versions of a game for different applications. Sibblingz is a new company that’s trying to address this problem. It’s attempting to build a single game that can run across various platforms while still offering a single social context to its users.
Just think about it. You’d be able to play the same game across multiple platforms and the system would keep track of a leaderboard that is consistent across whatever platform you decide to play on. Sibblingz will use Facebook Connect to facilitate all the social networking aspects of the gaming experience.
The system has already gone into private beta testing as of December 8th. Here’s a screenshot of the Facebook/web version of a new game called Little Monsters. No public version of it is yet available for the iPhone, but we’ll keep you posted on any developments we hear about.
