Canabalt Available for Web Browser and Apple iPhone

Canabalt is a simple yet popular browser-based flash game that is also available for the Apple iPhone (a $2.99 download).  In the game, players take on the role of a tiny man, trying to escape an alien invasion. To do that, the character jumps from rooftop to rooftop, dodges obstacles, and smashes through windows.

Why the game is good: There’s only one button in the game, the jump button, so pretty much anyone with a finger (or a toe… ?) can play it. In terms of color and graphics, although the game only has four shades of gray, the organization of pixels and overall designs of the graphics are not too shabby.

Every turn of the game places the character on a randomized track to escape from aliens, and because of this unique pattern, players will (hopefully) find the game more entertaining. In addition, the soundtrack of the game and the increasing pace also add to players’ overall excitement when playing.

Why the game is not so good: The game is hard to “win” because the route that a player starts on is randomized for every turn. Sometimes, players may get stuck 100 feet into the game, and other times, players won’t get stuck until their tiny man has traveled 5,000 feet. Many runs will likely last less than a minute each.

Apple’s also charging $2.99 for this app. It’s a decent game but considering that there are so many other great ones out there for around the same price (or cheaper), this deal doesn’t sound like a bargain to me. On the other hand, if you’re easily amused, it might be worth your while to check out.
