Runescape Creator Jagex Buckles Down on In-Game Fraud

Runescape creator Jagex has been buckling down on in-game fraud. Recently, a British man was arrested for stealing online accounts in the browser-based online game that boasts over 100 million active players and revolves around collecting and spending virtual cash and looted items. According to the game creator, they are further working with the United Kingdom police forces and the FBI to track down further “phishing thieves.” Continue reading below for more details on the case.

A 23-year-old man in Avon and Somerset was reported to have been arrested on November 24th by the Police National e-crime Unit on the pretense of various computer misuse offenses. As it turns out, this man was using phishing e-mails to trick Runescape players into divulging their login credentials to their online game accounts.

Once “phishing thieves” get access to players’ accounts, they then collect all the players’ unique items and virtual goods and sell them for Runescape gold, which ultimately can be sold for cold hard cash at a rate of two million Runescape gold for £6 (about $10 USD).

The Police National e-crime Unit is hard at work trying to catch these gaming thieves and are working with forces both in the United States and the United Kingdom, as these are the biggest audiences for Runescape. There are rumors of more upcoming arrests as Jagex has information on the game thieves’ whereabouts.

Aurora Blade Game Update Downloadable on Christmas Day

This past year, gamers have enjoyed Aurora Blade, a free-to-play browser-based MMORPG video game. The game is IGG’s first browser-based 2D RPG (role playing game) and as a Christmas present to all its devoted players out there, IGG will be offering new content for the game on Christmas Day.

Gamers will be able to download the update for Aurora Blade, which will include new PvP (player versus player) features that allow players who have been killed to get revenge on their killers without adding points to their violence level — pretty slick addition, huh? Also, new instanced dungeons and bosses have been added to various levels within the game.

IGG has also made a few in-game modifications to the browser-based game, including the addition of new character info and an option to block certain players from within the friends menu. If you’re interested in creating an account in the game or learning more about the Christmas Day update for Aurora Blade, you can visit IGG’s official website at ab.igg.com. Good luck and happy gaming!
